Becoming a school counselor or guidance counselor is not an easy job, it requires a specific skills, training and education, a bachelor's and master's degree in sociology, education or psychology (some say that the best degree to take is education because you will already be familiarized with school environment, procedures such as lesson planning and observe children's behaviour through your on-the-job training), and you may be also required (varies from state) an advance certain degree programs such as, individual and group counselling, human development, testing and evaluation, practicum and internship under supervision to become one and also you have to become licensed and certified educator first before you can practice you're chosen profession because becoming a school counselor isn't just becoming a counselor itself but also an educator.
Becoming a school counselor is a difficult yet very fulfilling job especially when you were able to help the student (which is your primary responsibility) and knowing that you are part of the success of that student.
